From time to time, we may realise there is something undefined in our lives that is taking up a lot of space. Often it is more visible to others than we think. Once we identify what the ‘elephant in the room’ actually is, it can be dealt with appropriately. One of the biggest unidentified ‘elephants’ in my life has been the fact that my husband has autism. It’s been almost exactly two years since his diagnosis now. These days I find myself laughing hysterically about our peculiar family interactions- things that not so long ago would have sent me into a panic- because I know why- and I am free to laugh and love anyway.
Elephants
The elephant in the room
Immediately loses some of his power
As soon as we give him a name
He might grow, or shrink
But at least we know what we are dealing with
Now, some elephants must be evicted
Others learned to live with
Some will transform
Still others shrink in size over time…
So, how do we deal with this elephant?
Well one thing’s for sure-
You can’t hide him under the rug, or behind the sofa-
That would fool nobody, and look very foolish indeed.
My elephant turned out to be quite lovable anyway
So I thought I might as well learn to live with him,
Now that he has shrunk to an appropriate size.
He is impossible to shift anyway.
Lovely, Jane.
